What a Schengen visa is, explained for Pakistani travellers
A Schengen Type C visa is a short-stay visa granting access to the whole Schengen area on one sticker. For a Pakistani passport holder it is usually the first serious visa application, and the rules around which country to apply to catch a lot of people out.

One visa, many countries
The Schengen area is a group of European states that abolished checks at their shared borders. A Type C visa issued by any one of them lets you travel across all of them without applying again.
You apply once, to one mission, and the sticker works everywhere in the area.
The ninety-day rule
You may stay ninety days in any rolling one hundred and eighty. This is counted across the whole area rather than per country, and it is counted backwards from any given day. Overstaying by even a few days creates a record that affects every future application, including to countries outside Europe.
Which mission to apply to
The one where you will spend the most nights. If your nights are split evenly between two countries, apply to whichever you enter first.
This trips up Pakistani applicants constantly, because appointment queues differ so much between missions that the temptation to apply wherever a slot exists is strong. Consulates check the itinerary against the mission, and a mismatch is a refusal.
Single, double and multiple entry
Most first-time applicants receive a single-entry visa valid for the dates requested. Multiple-entry visas with longer validity are issued to applicants with a history of compliant travel, which is one reason building travel history matters.
What it does not cover
- Working, including remote work for a Pakistani employer in some interpretations
- Studying for more than the ninety-day limit
- Ireland, which is not in the Schengen area and needs its own visa
- The United Kingdom, which needs a Standard Visitor visa
